Counselling and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) can really help people who are ‘stuck’ or ‘blocked’ from moving forward in life, or living any sort of fulfilled life due to emotional problems they have encountered somewhere along the way. These emotional issues could be recent, or they could go back 20 years - it really doesn’t matter when events have taken place, they take their toll, and before you know it, you are really feeling pain. You’ll be pleased to know that this pain can be released, by counselling. I practice ‘person-centred’ counselling, which is a talking therapy. It enables people to discuss and release issues and difficulties in situations where they are ‘stuck’, until they gain insight and clarity on what is troubling them. I incorporate CBT if and when appropriate when working with clients. CBT can help people identify negative thoughts and patterns, so this can help bring about change. The best way I could describe counselling and how it works would be that sometimes people have a piece(s) in their jigsaw that isn’t fitting the right way when they first come to see me. I strive to ensure that by the end of their counselling, that jigsaw piece(s) does fit the right way. It is wonderful to see how incredible people are to let go of their negativities and burdens, in huge contrast to when they first come to see me. We human beings are amazing things! For example, one of my clients (anonymous for confidentiality purposes) came to me suffering with depression. She was rather significantly affected by her depression - she was struggling to function daily, she had been signed off work (from a job she didn’t like), she was taking anti-depressants, she saw no point in getting up in the morning let alone doing any household chores or making anything healthy to eat, she couldn’t actually see the point in anything at all - persistent low mood typical of depression. At the end of counselling, her depression had lifted, she had come off anti-depressants (with the agreement of her GP), she left her previous job and got work teaching art classes which she was thoroughly enjoying and is what she had always aspired to do. Her personality was really blossoming again towards the end of our counselling relationship. As you can see, counselling and CBT really can have a cathartic and positive effect on people when they are experiencing emotional issues or difficulties.
